The children’s process—debating whether to find or make the rock, scavenging for the perfect one, and building a cozy “home” for it out of a tissue box—is both imaginative and relatable. Grandma’s reaction is priceless, and the family’s playful engagement with the obedient “pet” rock provides giggles and warm fuzzies for readers of all ages.

The illustrations, also done by Cindy Gee, are bright, cheerful, and full of personality. They perfectly complement the whimsical tone of the story and make it easy for young readers to follow along. The writing is accessible for early readers (grades K–3) but clever enough to entertain older readers who enjoy classic-style children’s books.
